Anticipating 2023: Social Media

As we approach the final month of 2022, I want to reflect on some aspects of social media that we should expect to see increasing in popularity as we enter into 2023.

1. Authenticity

One of the most important characteristics of a successful content creator is the ability to be authentic online. As content creators, it can be easy to fall into the trap of fake news, or even become one of those people who are just creating for money. You want to stay as authentic and true to yourself and/or your company as possible. Being your genuine, authentic self online shows potential clients that you are honest, and not just posting to gain their business. Posts that aren’t over-edited, or over-acted, and posts that people can relate to are the main demands of the majority of consumers on social media today.

2. TikTok

Without a doubt, TikTok is one of the most used social media platforms online today. With the platform continually increasing in popularity throughout 2020, 2021, and 2022, it is no surprise that it will continue to grow even more in 2023. People are always on the go and that’s undoubtedly why short-form video has become so popular - people feel that they don’t have the time to sit and read a post or an advertisement. Because the platform has millions upon millions of daily active users, businesses who haven’t taken advantage of TikTok’s growing popularity need to hop on the bandwagon NOW. As influencers continue to partner with businesses to increase their following and engagement, 2023 will also continue to increase TikTok’s daily active user count.

3. Community over Follower Count

Short-form video platforms such as TikTok and Instagram have dramatically increased the expectation of consistency in posting and content. Businesses that lack the ability to consistently create and post content often lose followers and therefore fail to create a community for their business online. I believe that the main goal of most businesses in 2023 will be to begin to create a loyal community for their business. A community that is excited about the business’s latest releases in products or services and that follows along to see the business grow and thrive. We may even see an increase in online giveaways or related activities as businesses strive to bring new clients to their growing online community (which may slightly take away from the authenticity of their social platforms, but undoubtedly will attract new potential clients). 

4. Augmented/Virtual Reality

This new-ish feature of technology is great for businesses to showcase their products, especially those in the furniture industry or related industries. Augmented and virtual reality features on websites are something that I think will continue to increase in popularity in 2023. For example, users who are looking for a new couch or dining table can use the camera on their phone to see the furniture piece in their space. This allows users to feel a sense of confidence when ordering and undoubtedly will grow their anticipation as they await their new furniture. Augmented reality is definitely something that consumers will look for when shopping online, and it is likely that businesses that don’t take advantage of this new technology will eventually reap the consequences.
