How to Remain Present in a Future-Focused Climate

3 Tips for Remaining Present in a Future-Focused Climate

Being a college student, it is easy to get caught up in focusing on your future. Besides, that is the main reason you are there in the first place - to better your future self, right? Believe me, I know how challenging it can be to remain present and in the moment when everyone around you seems to be focused on what is to come, but I have found a few tips which can help you when you become overwhelmed by our future-focused climate.

1. Remember

Remember what you have now. You may not have all of the money or the car that you would like to have, but remind yourself that it is just temporary. Your friends and family, this can be something that is easy to take for granted, but don’t forget that you have your own little fanclub cheering you on every step of the way. Be thankful for the opportunity that you have to further your education and better your future self as not everyone has this opportunity. Be thankful that you won’t be stuck at the same part-time job for the rest of your life. Remind yourself that your education is going to allow you to get that dream job you’ve always wanted!

2. Be Happy

Spend more time with the people who make you happy and fulfill your social needs. Don’t waste your time on people who make you feel like less of a person for going to school for a long time and not having a full time job just yet. I can remember many, many times throughout my college years where I felt like I was behind everyone else because I didn’t have a full-time job. Just remind yourself to live in the moment and appreciate these days where you aren’t having to worry about getting up to work Monday through Friday. Your time will come, but today is not that day. Just be happy!

3. Step Away

One thing that is far too easy to do nowadays is to get caught up in the screen. Whether that’s watching tv, mindlessly scrolling through socials, checking notifications every time your phone dings… screen time can actually take away from the present. For example, if you are out with your friends and all of you are scrolling through social media, you are actually taking away valuable social time. It is so important to remember to put the screen away especially when you’re with the people you love. So, take a step away from your screen time. You’ll be surprised how much more present and in the moment you will feel.

Being more present in your day-to-day life doesn’t mean that you have to completely stop thinking about the future. It is definitely important to have goals and a mindset which looks forward to achieving those goals. Being present just means that you remind yourself every now and then to appreciate what you have and accept things as they are, rather than what you would like them to be.
