Creators: Tips for Effective Communication with Clients

Have you ever found it difficult or stressful to communicate with clients? Yeah, me too; however, I have come up with several pointers that can help make communicating with clients a little bit easier and not as nerve-wracking.

1. TALK FACE-TO-FACE

It is important that your client knows that he/she is heard. Talking face-to-face as often as possible, even if that means on a Zoom call, assures the client that you are listening without distractions. This can, over time, build trust between yourself and your client.

2. RESPOND QUICKLY

Effective communication is most commonly done in a timely manner. For instance, if a client messaged you asking for an update on a project, and you fail to respond until over 24 hours later, the client will likely grow frustrated, which will only create tension among the two of you.

3. ASK QUESTIONS

Asking questions assures that you and your client are both on the same page. Pretending to understand your client's needs can cause miscommunication, misunderstanding, and, ultimately, causes mistakes to occur.

4. FEEDBACK

This can be a big one for a lot of people, especially those who are experienced professionals in their field; however, feedback is very important - especially for creators. Just as you give feedback to others, similarly, you should be open to receiving feedback. In addition, if you give effort to implementing feedback, clients will often notice and thank you for your efforts.

5. LISTEN ACTIVELY

Be sure your client knows that you are listening. Making eye contact and commenting every so often can help with this. Be sure that your setting is quiet and that you are giving the client your undivided attention. When the conversation comes to a close, summarize their points to assure that you understand their needs.

6. HAVE PATIENCE

Being patient with your clients should always be a top priority. Although you may hold lots of experience with communicating, your client may be the complete opposite. Be sure to give the client time to express themselves and never, ever interrupt while they are speaking.

Effective communication is key to being successful in this field. Although it can be easy to get carried away with the thought of a new project, be sure to always give the client your undivided attention and actively listen to their needs!
