5 Tips on Managing Your Workload for College Students

Ever notice yourself becoming frustrated and overwhelmed by the pressure of being a college student? Believe me, I know, being a fifth year college student myself, I feel like this a lot more than I would like to admit. The good news is, I have created a list of 5 things that I have found are useful for managing your workload. I hope you find them useful!

1. REMEMBER YOUR WHY

I always start with adjusting my mindset. Take some time to clear your mind. Find a spot where you can focus. Take a second to remember why you are doing all of this work and why you are in college in the first place. Remember the end goal. Doing this can not only help you find motivation but can also help you remember that all of this work is only bettering your future self.

2. FIND YOUR SPACE

College is notorious for distractions. For example, sitting in the middle of a noisy commons area to do your schoolwork probably isn’t the best way to focus. You want to find a place where you feel comfortable and relaxed. I recommend a local coffee shop, your school library, or even at your kitchen table. Anywhere that has wifi and allows for very little distraction.

3. ORGANIZATION IS KEY

Find a way to organize your deadlines. This could be a physical planner, an app such as Google Calendar, or even setting reminders on your phone. Any of these make a great outlet for organization. If you’re like me and prefer everything to be color-coordinated, I recommend giving Google Calendar a try. You can choose a separate color for every event that you add to your calendar. Personally, I assign a color to each one of my classes and a separate color for work deadlines!

4. KEEP A SCHEDULE

This is one of the most important tips on this list. Sticking to a schedule will not only help you stay organized, but it will also help assure you that you will meet your deadlines. Set aside a time for each task. Personally, I go through my assignments at the beginning of each week, and set a schedule for myself. The only thing about this tip is if you set a schedule, you need to stick with it. You are only hurting yourself by procrastinating, and your deadlines will sneak up on you. No one wants that!

5. TAKE BREAKS

I know, I know, sometimes when your workload is overwhelming, it is hard to remember to give yourself breaks. I do not allow myself to work any longer than 2 hours at a time without a 15-30 minute break. Remind yourself that college is a lot, and it is only healthy to give your mind a rest every now and then.

Still feeling overwhelmed? Take a moment and remember that college isn’t meant to be easy, and it is perfectly okay to feel this way. You got this!
